Ans.: The rays are flattened cartilaginous fish which are related to sharks. Their fins are joined to the body by large flaps of skin so that they seem to fly through water. They breathe through slits or spiracles which are present behind their eyes. They do not take in the water from which they get oxygen through the mouth like most other fish as they swim close to the bottom of the water. As they are scavengers feeding on carrion, they would rarely pick up the unclean bits of meat and germs that they otherwise would have on their feathers. This makes them on the whole one of the few species of animals that have adapted for the sake of hygiene.
